Miasto wyrosło na miejscu istniejącej od średniowiecza osady rybackiej o nazwie Döderhultsvik. W 1646 roku królowa Krystyna nadała jej prawa osady handlowej (köping), dzięki czemu mogły się tu odbywać regularne targi. Przez kolejne dwieście lat miejscowość pozostawała jednak w cieniu pobliskiego Kalmaru. Dopiero po wielu nieudanych próbach udało się uzyskać prawa miejskie. Od tego momentu rozpoczął się intensywny rozwój handlu i przemysłu, a Oskarshamn stał się ważnym ośrodkiem transportu i wymiany handlowej.
EN: The town grew on the site of the medieval fishing settlement of Döderhultsvik. In 1646, Queen Christina granted it the status of a market town (köping), allowing regular markets to be held there. For the next two centuries, however, it remained overshadowed by nearby Kalmar. After many unsuccessful attempts, it finally received full town privileges. From then on, trade and industry developed rapidly, and Oskarshamn became an important center for commerce and transportation.
Spacerując po mieście, najbardziej urzekła mnie dzielnica starych drewnianych domów wzniesionych pomiędzy skałami na zboczu prowadzącym z zatoki do centrum. Miejsce to nazywa się Besväret („utrudnienie”, „kłopot”), być może właśnie ze względu na ukształtowanie terenu – mieszkańcy musieli codziennie wspinać się po stromych skałach, aby dostać się z portu do swoich domów. Domki powstały w pierwszej połowie XIX wieku, jeszcze w czasach, gdy osada nosiła nazwę Döderhultsvik. Należały do rybaków, marynarzy, rzemieślników i pracowników portu.
EN: While walking around the town, I was most captivated by the district of old wooden houses nestled among the rocks on the hillside leading from the bay to the town center. The area is called Besväret (“The Trouble” or “The Hardship”), perhaps because of the challenging terrain—its residents had to climb the steep rocks every day to get home from the harbor. These houses were built in the first half of the 19th century, back when the settlement was still known as Döderhultsvik. They belonged to fishermen, sailors, craftsmen, and dock workers.
